To have a good general obedience from your dog is a must (I believe) to be able to train for competition or to cope with his dog in everyday life. Here I draw a parallel between the general obedience and raising a dog. I think it should be obvious that dog owners take their responsibilities and ensure that the dog is well-mannered. Often dogowners have better control over their children than on their dog which I think is quite strange because it is much easier to raise a dog than a child (generally of course).

Sometimes it is that the owner have a dog breed that requires much more than the owner is capable of or that the individual dog requires more than most other dogs. But mostly, it appears that the owner does not know how important it is with dogs upbringing and general obedience from the day it becomes a family member.

Unfortunately, it appears to be common for instructors in puppy training and general obedience training, simply omit the “chapter” on the dog’s upbringing. There are various schools in the dog world, and a thousand different opinions on how best it should handle its dogs.

Everyone active in dog training have different views on how dogowners should handle his dog, and which way is best. It is therefore important to think through how you want to act against your dog and what is ok to demand from your dog. There is much in dog training on “soft” and “hard” methods which I think is ridiculous when it is fairly easy as a new dogowner to think or believe that we must take a position on either one or the other. One training method does not exclude another. Only you can determine what is “hard” or “soft” for your own dog, these terms are relative. All dog training is individual and it is your task as a dogowner to ensure that the methods are suitable for your dog.
